A year ago, I floated an idea to my closest friends: “Let’s do a reunion trip. How about Sri Lanka?” My birthday became the perfect excuse (though let’s be honest, it wasn’t the real reason). The truth is, as life speeds by and we all grow older, this year was 57, I just wanted us together again. After all, friendships that span four decades are rare treasures—unshaken by time or distance.
So, off we went! We kicked things off in Colombo, easing into the rhythm of reunion life. Afternoons were for cocktails, evenings for rooftop drinks, and dinners were reached via a fleet of tuk-tuks (though one inevitably arrived 30 minutes late—classic!). Colombo charmed us with its mix of old and new: vibrant Hindu temples, the iconic train line hugging the coastline, and bustling streets full of life.
The train ride from Colombo to Ahangama was a highlight—a quintessential Sri Lankan experience. Once we arrived, the group split up for a few days. Some ventured to Ella for scenic hikes and safaris, while others stayed back to soak in Ahangama’s rugged coastline. Mornings here were magical: swims at sunrise and surfers catching waves as we sipped our coffee.
Our days unfolded organically—yoga sessions, surfing lessons, and day trips to Galle or nearby beach clubs. Afternoons were spent hopping between trendy cafés filled with digital nomads living their best lives. It was a mix of relaxation and adventure, perfectly tailored to our vibe.
This trip wasn’t just about exploring Sri Lanka; it was about celebrating each other. After 40 years of friendship, we’ve learned that true friends don’t just stand by you—they bring out your magic. And in Sri Lanka’s beauty and warmth, we found not just memories but a reminder of why we’ve stayed so close for so long.
Keep making great memories.
