A Mother’s Day Message from Our Founder Emma

Yes, it really is a sensitive time—Mother’s Day (and all the emotions it stirs up) can be a lot. I speak from experience: my four siblings and I lost our beautiful mother when we were still young. But life, in its unpredictable way, brought us another wonderful woman when our father remarried. Suddenly, we were a family of seven kids, with two strong mother figures to look up to. It wasn’t always easy, but it’s made us a tight-knit, slightly chaotic, and a very loving bunch.

Some of my siblings and friends haven’t had kids of their own, but that hasn’t stopped them from mothering. They spoil the cousins, fuss over friends, and generally spread that nurturing energy everywhere. I’ve learned that mothering isn’t something you opt out of—it’s something you opt into, in all sorts of creative ways. It’s the strongest emotion, and yes, sometimes it can turn your world upside down. But that’s just life, isn’t it?

Now, we’re in the “empty nest” chapter. Both of our kids have flown the coop and are out there creating their own trails. I’ll admit, I sometimes find myself wishing they’d come back home. And when they do, it’s wonderful for about three days—until the fridge is empty, the house is a mess, my car is mysteriously missing, and I’m back to lying awake at night wondering if they’ll ever come home. They take full advantage of our open-door policy, and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The real lesson has been learning to love and let go at the same time. These days, we plan family catch-ups in all sorts of places—maybe on Stradbroke Island, or in India or Sweden. We reconnect, we laugh, and I’m reminded that we don’t own our kids. We just get the privilege of watching them live their own lives, in their own way. It’s not easy to pick a lifestyle that truly fits, but I think we’ve done alright in giving them the space to figure out what makes them happy.

Mothering comes in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes the best thing we can do is just show up, listen, and love—mess, empty fridge, and all.
